“The Case of the Left-Handed Lady,” by Nancy Springer, is a fantastic detective story that I thoroughly enjoyed reading.

The detective is Enola Holmes, the fourteen-year-old younger sister of Sherlock Holmes. Enola has run away from home and is alone in London, trying to make a living as a detective. Throughout the story she is searched for by her brother. But Enola enjoys the freedom and the challenge of living on her own. The plot focuses on Enola’s adventures as she avoids her older brother and at the same time tries to solve a case for her client.

Springer’s writing style is clear and involving. She adequately recreates the London of Sherlock Holmes’ time, depicting the rough characters and the customs and fashions of the time. I would recommend “The Case of the Left-Handed Lady” as an amusing mystery story that shows Sherlock Holmes from a different angle.
